ACE - Advanced Combat Environment 2

Description:

ACE 2 is a full conversion modification for ArmA 2 that strives to better simulate the modern battlefield, thereby enhancing gameplay and encouraging better teamwork. Its changes are both extensive and significant with a large number of ArmA 2 features being either changed or replaced, as well as many new features being introduced. The feature list can be found here. ACE 2 also introduces a large amount of high-quality content including new units, weapons, vehicles, and other assets.

Recommended Addons
These addons are either client-side (so are entirely optional) or will potentially be used by ANZINS for co-op sessions. All come recommended for adding significantly to the game.

LandTex

By default the ArmA 2 ground textures (what you see at a distance, not up close) look 'blotchy' or 'pixely' which is both unappealing and unrealistic. Landtex replaces the default textures making them look much more organic and appealing. Visually the difference is quite stunning and the improvement dramatic. And all of this comes at no performance cost at all.

Quesh-Kibrul

Quesh-Kibrul is an island map with a desert theme, consisting of three distinct yet narrowly joined islands set somewhere in the Middle East, perhaps in The Gulf or Arabian Sea. On the main island the city of Quesh-Kibrul lies in the shadow of the oil trade with pipelines linking massive storage tanks to refineries and factories. The other islands remain almost untouched by industry and are barren except for the occasional settlement and dilapidated relic of a now obsolete enterprise. Quesh-Kibrul's design cleverly offers a sprawling landscape for long-range armour and air battles while also being detailed enough for compelling infantry scenarios, all in a believable setting.

Installing Addons (General)
Mod Folders

Typically the best way to install and run mods for ArmA 2 is by using mod folders. Below is a description of how a typical mod folder is set up - the vast majority of mods use exactly this format, so remembering this will allow you to set up and run nearly any mod for ArmA 2 with minimal fuss.

NOTE: There are some cases where this installation method won't work - mods relying on an updater tool for example - so always make sure you scan the mod's installation instructions first.

    1. Create a new folder in your main ArmA 2 folder named "@Mod", the "Mod" being whatever you wish to call the folder. For ease of reference call it the name of the mod you are installing.

    2. Inside this folder create another one named "Addons".

    3. Inside the Addons folder place the mod files you have downloaded. In the large majority of cases the only necessary ones are .pbo and .bisign files, but refer to the mod's documentation if you are unsure.

Shortcuts & Target Lines

This is how you tell ArmA 2 which mod folders you want it to load, if any.

    1. It is a good idea to create a new shortcut to use for mods. Either find whatever shortcut you launch the game from and copy it, or create a new one from arma2.exe (make sure it is the arma2.exe in the "beta" folder if you are using the ArmA 2 beta patch).

    2. Now right-click on the new shortcut and go to Properties. Within Properties find the Target line.

    3. Say you have named your mod folder "@Terrorists". You should see some text linking to your arma2.exe already in the Target line - after this add, with a space, "-mod=@Terrorists" or "-mod=beta;@Terrorists" depending on if you run the beta patch or not. So your Target line should now resemble this (with beta patch):

    Code:
    "C:\Program Files\Bohemia Interactive\ArmA 2\beta\arma2.exe" -nosplash -mod=beta;@Terrorists

    or this (without beta patch):

    Code:
    "C:\Program Files\Bohemia Interactive\ArmA 2\beta\arma2.exe" -nosplash -mod=@Terrorists

Note: -nosplash gets rid of the intro movies and logos, speeding up starting the game. It is entirely optional.

    4. To load more than one mod folder at a time, simply separate them with semi-colons like so: "-mod=beta;@Terrorists;@Coolmap;@Coolplane" making sure not to put a semi-colon at the end of the line.

General Note: Feel free to create as many shortcuts as you like. Many people use three or four different shortcuts for different set-ups, for example one for vanilla ArmA 2, one for the beta patch without mods, one for the beta patch with mods, one for a different set of mods, etc. Whatever is most convenient for you.
